Project description

A terraced house in the middle of a row, with an annual electricity consumption of around 2,300 kWh, was gradually made more energy-efficient. The starting point was the use of an electric car without its own charging facility, which meant that, initially, charging was carried out exclusively at public charging points.

In 2022, a wallbox was installed, making it possible to charge the car at home for the first time. Two years later, the system was supplemented by a photovoltaic system with battery storage.

The result: significant cost savings and greater energy independence. Whilst public charging previously cost around 50ct/kWh (equivalent to approx. 10 €/100 km*), the costs fell to around 35.9ct/kWh (equivalent to approx. 7.18 €/100 km*) with the wallbox. Thanks to the combination of the PV system and battery storage, charging costs were ultimately reduced to around 19ct/kWh (equivalent to approx. 3.80 €/100 km*).

The PV system also led to a massive reduction in general household electricity costs: from €700 in 2020 to just around €300 from 2024 onwards (excluding standing charges in each case).

This real-world example impressively demonstrates how the combination of charging infrastructure and photovoltaics can sustainably reduce both mobility and household costs.
