Local heating refers to the supply of heat via a network that connects buildings over short distances. Unlike district heating, distribution takes place in smaller, decentralised units and usually at lower flow temperatures of between 55 and 70°C. The heat is often generated by combined heat and power (CHP) plants, solar thermal systems or ground-source heat pumps. The choice of heat generators depends on local conditions and available energy sources. With the growing share of renewable energies, local heating is becoming increasingly important for climate-neutral heat supply and contributes to local value creation. Typically, local heating networks are used in residential areas or industrial estates and supply a limited number of buildings. They are usually operated by heating (and power) plants with a thermal output of a few megawatts.
