District heating

District heating supplies buildings centrally with heat, which is generated in a plant and distributed via a pipe network.

Description of the technology

District heating is an environmentally friendly way of heating buildings and providing hot water. Heat is generated in special heating or power stations and transported directly to the houses via well-insulated pipes. Although many of these systems still use natural gas, more and more are focussing on renewable energies such as wood, geothermal energy, solar heat or large heat pumps. District heating networks often supply entire neighbourhoods or cities with heat.

In Dresden, SachsenEnergie AG is responsible for the district heating supply. The company shows which areas are already connected to the district heating network and where it will be expanded in the future. SachsenEnergie aims to make its heat supply completely climate-neutral by 2035 if possible - or by 2045 at the latest. The company has set out in a plan how it intends to achieve this.

A wide range of funding options are available for switching to modern heating technologies or energy-efficient refurbishment. Government programmes support investments in climate-friendly heating systems through grants, low-interest loans or tax concessions. It is advisable to check the available funding programmes before implementation and to seek expert advice from the relevant funding provider.
