Hydrogen

As the energy source of the future, hydrogen can play an important role in the heating transition.

Description of the technology

Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier that can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in various areas - such as transport, industry and, in the long term, heat supply. Primarily green hydrogen plays an important role in the energy transition thanks to its climate-friendly production and utilisation. It can also be an important building block in the process of decarbonisation for use in the building sector.

In future, hydrogen will not play a central but complementary role in the heat supply - primarily because it will only be available to a limited extent in the coming years. Its use in combined heat and power plants or as an admixture in the existing natural gas network is conceivable. In the long term, dedicated hydrogen networks could be set up, for example for industrial or neighbourhood applications. Utilisation in the building sector will primarily focus on special contexts in which no more efficient alternatives are possible.

Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis. This involves splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen using electricity.
