Biogas

Biogas is a renewable energy source that is obtained from organic residues and can be used for sustainable heat generation.

Description of the technology

Biogas is a flexible, renewable energy source that is obtained from organic residues such as liquid manure, biowaste or energy crops and can make an important contribution to a climate-neutral heat supply. Thanks to its local production and storage capacity, biogas supports the energy transition by replacing fossil fuels and reducing dependence on imports.

Biogas can play a central role in the municipal heat supply - especially in combined heat and power plants (CHP), where it generates electricity and heat at the same time, or by feeding it into the existing biogas or natural gas network. In the long term, biogas can also be utilised in pure biogas networks or as biomethane (processed biogas) for direct use in buildings. Biogas offers an efficient and sustainable alternative, particularly in rural regions or for supplying heat to neighbourhoods where other renewable options such as heat pumps or district heating are only available to a limited extent.

Biogas is produced through fermentation in biogas plants, where organic substances are broken down into methane and CO₂ in the absence of oxygen. The resulting biogas can be used directly or upgraded to biomethane, which has the same properties as natural gas and can therefore be used in the existing gas infrastructure.
