A heat pump absorbs natural heat from the environment and uses it for heating and hot water.

Description of the technology

Heat pumps utilise environmental heat (thermal energy) from the air, ground or water and raise its temperature to the required level using electrical energy (electricity). Heat exchangers are then used to heat water for heating or showers. This process enables heat pumps to deliver many times the amount of electricity used as heating energy.

The major advantage of heat pumps is their high energy efficiency, as they obtain most of the energy they need from renewable sources and only require a small amount of electricity for operation. Heat pumps are used in both new and existing buildings. In new buildings, a heat pump is particularly suitable in combination with underfloor heating or other low-temperature heating systems. Modern appliances can not only heat, but also cool in summer, thus contributing to climate adaptation.

Retrofitting a heat pump in existing buildings is generally possible and offers a sustainable alternative to conventional heating systems. Heat pumps can be operated with conventional radiators. For efficient operation, the flow temperature of the heating system should ideally be below 55 °C. Good thermal insulation or the use of low-temperature heating systems can further increase efficiency. The costs for retrofitting vary depending on the type of heat pump selected, the installation effort and the space required. Retrofitting heat pumps in existing buildings does not require extensive refurbishment.

A wide range of funding options are available for switching to modern heating technologies or energy-efficient refurbishment. Government programmes support investments in climate-friendly heating systems through grants, low-interest loans or tax concessions. It is advisable to check the available funding programmes before implementation and to seek expert advice from the relevant funding provider.
