Electricity storage

Electricity or battery storage systems utilise surplus electricity to store it for later use and thus increase the self-consumption of self-generated energy.

Description of the technology

The home battery storage system stores surplus electricity from a photovoltaic system and makes it available to the household when needed. It is one of the most popular solutions for increasing self-consumption of solar energy and reducing dependence on the public power grid. Home battery storage systems store the solar power generated during the day and release it in the evening or at night when the sun is not shining.

With a battery storage system, households can benefit in particular from dynamic electricity tariffs: Surplus electricity is stored when prices are low and utilised when electricity prices are high. This saves costs, increases independence from the electricity grid and can reduce the load on the grid. However, dynamic tariffs also harbour risks, such as fluctuating prices at peak load times. A battery storage system mitigates these fluctuations by acting as a buffer and making electricity costs more stable.

Key technical data and area of application

Installation is simple for small storage capacities in combination with PV systems, but requires professional installers for higher capacities and integration into a home energy system. As the storage capacity is limited, additional electricity can be drawn from the grid in the event of high power consumption or extended periods of darkness. They work particularly efficiently in combination with a photovoltaic system and intelligent energy management.
